Front Innovation takes third place in the Climate Competition
This autumn, Front Innovation participated for the first time in the climate challenge – Norway's largest climate competition.
Sustainability is a core part of the work at Front Innovation. They assist their clients in prioritising innovation projects that advance climate and energy transitions. Front helps them to realise the financial values available in the support system. Thus, there is a strong awareness that companies aiming to succeed in the future must excel in sustainability, including keeping their own emissions low. This requires a solid culture where everyone is pulling in the same direction.
Joining was an easy decision.
"We're very committed to sustainability, and we love competitions, so it was an easy choice to participate," said CFO Harald Amdal. "Especially since the competition seemed to foster internal unity while positively impacting our carbon emissions." And they were not disappointed.
Front Innovation secured a strong third place in the fiercely competitive autumn of 2024. With a participation rate of 100%, there was also intense rivalry internally, with just 3.27kg CO2e separating first and second place.
Project Coordinator Solveig Tjølsen reported that the atmosphere surrounding the climate competition was very positive throughout the period. "The competition made us more aware that small adjustments in our habits can significantly impact our carbon footprint. It acted as an eye-opener, and many experimented with new habits. Despite the autumn weather, there were very few cars in the car park. It will be interesting to see how this evolves."
In-house Coordinator Camilla Finnesand also shared: "We've had a lot of fun with our internal competition, and it has sparked many great discussions around the lunch table and by the coffee machine. I've noticed that both my team and I have changed some of our habits – a bit of sustainable transition here and there! All in all, it's a fantastic initiative for an important cause, and it truly engages us."
Tips and experiences from the competition
To conduct the competition engagingly, Front Innovation took several steps:
- They divided employees into teams and appointed team leaders beforehand. The teams were allowed to choose their own team names and create their own logos, fostering ownership and engagement.
- They ramped up the competitive spirit with an internal kick-off where the tool was presented along with information about their own internal prizes. The competition concluded with a celebration for the winning team.
- Additionally, they created a team leader chat on Teams. Here, there was vigorous discussion about what could be logged and what was required to log a specific activity. This helped maintain the internal focus on the competition.
- Finally, they facilitated a greater offering of vegetarian and vegan options in the cafeteria. Despite the choice, more people opted for both vegetarian and vegan alternatives to gather points.
Challenges along the way
During the competition, they experienced some discussions and differing opinions about what should be loggable, as well as scepticism about whether certain activities were carried out. However, this was seen as a positive challenge: "These discussions helped to strengthen the competitive spirit and engagement. It was an important part of what made the competition so successful," says Solveig.
Will you participate again?
When asked if they would participate again, the answer is clear:
"Absolutely, we would love to participate again! Next time, we plan to organise more joint activities to highlight the themes and motivate each other even more."
An inspiring experience
In summary, the climate competition has inspired Front Innovation to make small, but significant adjustments in their daily routines. This has had a positive impact both on the climate budget and on awareness of sustainable choices.
"The competition has really engaged us and strengthened the unity within the company. We encourage other companies to participate in such initiatives. It's a win-win for the company, the employees, and the climate," concludes Harald Amdal.
Front Innovation looks forward to next year's climate competition and hopes to climb even higher on the podium. With renewed effort and commitment, they are ready to take new sustainable steps forward.
