How does the Ducky Challenge work?

In this article you will learn how the Ducky Challenge works.

What is the purpose?

The purpose of a campaign is to raise awareness about climate action, environmental issues and our impact both as individuals and when we work together in a team.

How does the Ducky Challenge work?

The Ducky Challenge is an engaging team challenge where you compete to save the most CO₂ or collect the most points over the course of 2–4 weeks. By recording daily climate and environmentally friendly activities, you become more aware of your own behavior and impact.

The challenge focuses only on positive actions you can take to reduce your environmental impact. Instead of recording emissions, you record savings or points.

The purpose is to show how small actions can add up to big, positive effects. This activity increases participants' awareness of their own impact in their own everyday lives, at work and in organizations or the municipality.
For each activity, you see how much greenhouse gas emissions (CO₂e) you save, or how many points you get – and can learn about why this activity is important.

  • CO₂-based challenges show the savings if an average Norwegian completes the activity.
  • Point-based challenges give points according to the degree of social impact:
    • 5 points for individual impact
    • 10 points for social impact
    • 15 points for local impact

This makes the challenge an effective tool for engaging employees in the sustainability strategy, creating conversations about climate and testing out new, more environmentally friendly habits.

How to get started

A climate competition can be organized alone or reinforce an event with a similar theme. Here are X steps to organizing a competition that engages:

  1. Set a date and ask participants to save time in their calendars.
  2. Recruit a group of ambassadors who want to help create extra engagement for the competition; hang up posters, connect live screens, communicate in weekly meetings, etc.
  3. Set up the competition in the Admin tool - define teams and choose an image and prize.
  4. Invite participants and share all useful information 5-7 days before the competition starts.
  5. Hold a short kick-off to mark the start of the first day.
When the challenge starts, participants can start logging activities. It is recommended to log daily for best results, but it is possible to log for the last three days.
Note: After the challenge is over, you can no longer log activities.

Competition and awards

You can organize the challenge at different levels:

  • Department against department
  • Team against team in the same department
  • Individual participants against each other on the same team

For extra motivation, you can award the team that saves the most CO₂ or points, for example with a climate-friendly gift related to the theme. Alternatively, you can promise a larger environmental investment or reward several teams, for example for "highest participation".
